Almost 20 years ago, I worked as a contractor for the state police for a couple months. During that time, I worked out of their headquarters as an IT helpdesk specialist on 2nd shift. My primary responsibility was to answer the phone, enter tickets or fix their problems. One night, I received a phone call from an officer located at a satellite police station. He came out and told me that he accidentally knocked this monitor off his desk and broke it. During this time, we were using the massive CRT monitors. They were only 15”-18” but were very heavy and balky. I found it hard to believe that such a heavy item fell off a desk, but I didn’t have any reason not to believe him after all he was a police officer. I grabbed all the information that I needed to submit a ticket to our field service technicians and continued with my night.

The next day, I received a phone call from the field service technician regarding the ticket I put in for the broken monitor. The technician wanted to know what the officer told me and most importantly how the monitor was broken. I related what I was told and that is when the technician told me that the monitor didn’t accidentally fall off the officer’s desk. Then I asked how was it broken? He replied, “He clearly shot it with his gun”. I was speechless! I had to ask him again. He told me that there was a bullet hole that went through the screen and out the back. Then I asked if the officer was being investigated for firing his firearm in the building. The technician told me that he was, and he thinks it will be the last monitor he uses. It was at least the last phone call I received from him.

Just goes to show you that all people lie and do stupid sh!t at some point.
