When companies post new jobs, they put all the things they would like you to be able to do. However, there always seems to be that vague line within the job description that states something like “Other duties as assigned” which translates to whatever we tell you to do. I always wondered if the individual within the story below would have thought when he was hired he would be do what I saw him doing.

The company I worked for during this time was expanding its manufacturing facility. All the major construction work was completed. We also received the permission to occupy the new section of the building. All the doors within the building were closed and we were in the process of installing all the new equipment. My boss would always give me a list of items that needed to be completed and I would work on them throughout the night. I was completely by myself except for the occasional roaming security guard since the company wasn’t running production. This particular night, I was up on a ladder routing cables to PCs and monitors. It was around 4:00 am in the morning and I barely saw a single person the entire night. When suddenly, I felt as if I was being watched and could have sworn I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I scanned the entire area but didn’t see anyone. Just as I was going back to work I saw a stray house cat shot across the floor in front of me. I laughed a little because who would expect a stray house cat to be in either place of work just roaming around. A minute later a security guard came running up. He was out of breath and he barely got out the words,” which way did the cat go”? I pointed in the general direction and he took off. About ten minutes later the security guard comes walking back without the cat. I asked him why he was chasing a stray cat through the building? Apparently, the cat entered the building while the construction was taking place and the security guards were tasked with trying to catch it. They had been chasing it around the building for several days without any luck. I bet the security guard never thought he would be paid to chase a cat around when he got hired.
